Description

Venture deep into the frozen heart of the Karakoram with Travan Pakistan on a once-in-a-lifetime 15-day Snow Leopard Photography Expedition. This immersive winter journey takes you through some of Pakistan’s most pristine habitats — from the windswept plains of Deosai to the rugged valleys of Hushe and Basho — in search of the elusive Himalayan snow leopard.

Living at elevations between 3,500 and 5,000 meters, the snow leopard is one of the world’s most mysterious predators. Once near extinction, it now survives in the high mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, thanks to decades of conservation efforts. This expedition offers both wildlife photographers and nature enthusiasts an unparalleled opportunity to track and photograph not only the snow leopard but also ibex, foxes, golden eagles, and other alpine fauna against breathtaking Karakoram backdrops.

Guided by expert Himalayan trackers and supported by local conservation teams, each day combines adventure, patience, and the quiet beauty of the high-altitude wilderness. Nights are spent in comfortable lodges, scenic glamps, and wilderness camps, allowing you to experience the full rhythm of Pakistan’s remote winter landscapes.

Take a morning flight from Islamabad to Skardu, a spectacular journey offering views of Nanga Parbat and the Karakoram peaks. Upon arrival, drive to Shigar Valley and check into the historic Shigar Fort Residence for lunch. In the afternoon, visit Amburiq Mosque, one of the oldest in Baltistan, and stroll through the traditional lanes of Shigar village. Evening briefing with your wildlife guide before settling in for the night.

After breakfast, drive toward Sadpara Village, where the lower slopes of Deosai National Park begin. This area is known for winter sightings of snow leopards descending to lower elevations in search of prey. Spend the day scanning ridgelines with spotting scopes and cameras, guided by expert trackers. Return to Skardu by evening for a comfortable night at your resort.

Head out again to the Deosai periphery. The vast, snow-covered plateau offers extraordinary opportunities to photograph Himalayan ibex, foxes, and eagles. Your wildlife guide will share insights into snow leopard behavior and tracking techniques. As the sun sets behind the frozen ridges, return to Skardu for a warm dinner and overnight stay.

A full day of photography and exploration in the Deosai region. Depending on snow conditions, travel deeper into accessible sections in Deosai. Keep an eye out for leopard tracks, scat, and prey movements. Return to Skardu by dusk for rest and review of day’s sightings.

One final day of tracking near Sadpara and Gultari zones, maximizing your chance for sightings. In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxed return to Skardu, with optional visits to Katpana Desert or Upper Kachura Lake, now frozen in winter stillness. Overnight stay at a comfortable resort.

Drive along the scenic Shyok River to Khaplu, one of Baltistan’s most picturesque valleys. Visit the restored Khaplu Palace and explore the historic Chaqchan Mosque, dating back to the 14th century. The afternoon is free for landscape photography and acclimatization. Overnight in Khaplu.

Embark on a breathtaking drive to Hushe Village, the last settlement before the great peaks of the Karakoram. The valley sits beneath the towering Masherbrum Peak (7,821 m) — a key snow leopard corridor. Meet local trackers and set up camp near the village. Evening briefing on wildlife activity in the area.

Spend the day exploring the high ridges and frozen streams surrounding Hushe. Guided by Himalayan wildlife experts, scan the cliffs for signs of snow leopards, ibex herds, and golden eagles. Learn about the traditional Balti way of life in one of the world’s most isolated mountain communities. Overnight in wilderness camp.

Another full day of snow leopard tracking in the Hushe Valley. The pristine environment and towering granite peaks provide a dramatic backdrop for photography. Even without a direct sighting, the experience of tracing the animal’s route through tracks and calls is deeply rewarding. Return to camp by late afternoon.

Early morning tracking session with your guide before returning to camp for lunch. In the afternoon, review captured photographs and discuss conservation efforts in Baltistan led by local communities. Evening under a sky filled with stars. Overnight in wilderness camp.

Bid farewell to the tracking team and drive back to Skardu. En route, enjoy short stops for landscape photography along the Shyok River. Upon arrival, check into your resort and relax after several days in the wilderness.

Depart for Basho Valley, a hidden gem surrounded by pine forests and granite cliffs. Known for snow leopard activity and diverse wildlife, this valley offers a blend of accessibility and remoteness. Settle into a scenic eco-lodge or camp by the river.

Spend the day with your wildlife team exploring Basho’s side valleys for tracks and sightings. Photograph ibex grazing on high ridges and enjoy the tranquil alpine atmosphere. Evening bonfire and dinner at the lodge.

Return to Skardu, stopping at Soq Valley for final landscape photography sessions. The valley’s frozen waterfalls and soft winter light make for perfect farewell shots. Overnight stay at resort in Skardu.

Transfer to Skardu Airport for the flight to Islamabad. Reflect on your unforgettable journey — a rare combination of wildlife exploration, mountain culture, and high-altitude beauty — as you conclude your Snow Leopard Photography Expedition with Travan Pakistan.
